Global Champagne Market Booms, Mainland Champagne Shipments Up 70.36%

The French Champagne Association CIVC (Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne) has just released its 2021 Champagne Market Statistics Report, and 2021 is a prosperous year for the global champagne market.

The French wine and spirits market will total 14.2 billion euros in sales in 2021, and champagne remains second only to Cognac in total shipments, accounting for one-third of total wine sales.

After 2020, which was severely affected by the epidemic, champagne consumption will become active again in 2021, especially in the export market. Champagne exports totalled 3.6 billion euros, up 31.8% from 2020 and 3.4% from pre-pandemic 2019.

The epidemic has affected the global champagne consumption habits, and home consumption and online shopping of champagne have risen sharply.

It is worth noting that the shipment of champagne in mainland China has increased by 54.69% compared with last year, and the shipment value has reached an increase of 70.36%!

Champagne shipped 320.2 million bottles, up 31.18% from 2020; up 7.7% from 2019

 

In 2021, the total global shipment of champagne is 320.2 million bottles, an increase of 31.18% compared with 2020 and an increase of 7.7% compared with 2019 before the epidemic.

Among them, wine merchant brands accounted for 72.9%, independent wine farmers brands accounted for 18.2%, and cooperative brands accounted for 8.9%;

French mainland accounted for 43.9%, EU countries accounted for 18.9%, and other countries accounted for 37.2%.

Among the total shipments, wine merchant brands accounted for 78.2%, independent wine farmers brands accounted for 14.8%, and cooperative brands accounted for 7.1%;

French mainland accounted for 36.7%, the EU accounted for 20.2%, and other countries accounted for 43.2%.

 

The proportion of champagne exports continues to rise

 

Judging from the data in recent years, the export market plays an increasingly important role in the overall champagne market, and champagne is prospering in markets outside France. In 2021, champagne exports will account for 56.1% of total global shipments, and total exports will account for 63.3% of total shipments.

Champagne exports in 2021 set a record at 179.6 million bottles, an increase of 37.31% from 2020 and a 15.1% increase from 2019, before the pandemic. Champagne exports in 2021 will reach 3.6 billion euros, an increase of 38.46% compared with 2020 and an increase of 12.5% compared to 2019 before the epidemic.

In terms of total shipments, the top seven of the world’s top ten champagne export markets were the same as the previous year, the Greater China ranking was the same as last year, and Scandinavia was among the top ten. (unit: ten thousand euros)

It is worth mentioning that the United States ranks first in both champagne shipments and shipments in 2021. Since 2012, the U.S. has grown by an average of 7.6% in annual champagne shipments and 8.8% in value, making it one of the top champagne export markets.

As the largest and most mature champagne consumer market in Asia, Japan ranks third in both champagne shipments and shipments in 2021. Japan is also one of the most diverse markets for champagne, with only 62.6% of unvintage blended champagne shipments, the smallest share of this type of champagne among the major export markets, 13.9% lower than the average.

 

Champagne export market statistics in Greater China

 

In 2021, 4.8 million bottles of champagne will be shipped in Greater China, an increase of 36.36% from 2020 and a 17.3% increase from 2019 before the epidemic.

Champagne shipments in Greater China in 2021 will be 150 million euros, an increase of 53.2% from 2020 and a 53.06% increase from 2019 before the epidemic.

Champagne shipments and shipments in Greater China have increased significantly. It can be seen that Champagne customers in Greater China have not only increased their demand for champagne, but also increasingly prefer high-end champagnes with higher prices and higher quality.

 

Statistics on Champagne Shipment in Mainland China Market for Nearly 13 Years

 

Champagne shipments in mainland China in 2021 will be 2,103,172 bottles, surpassing 2.1 million bottles again after 2018. It is an increase of 54.69% compared with 2020 and an increase of 14.8% compared with 2019 before the epidemic.

Total shipments were 66,678,290 euros, an increase of 70.36% from 2020 and a 69.9% increase from 2019, before the pandemic. The increase was mainly due to higher champagne delivery shipments of rosé and high-end champagnes.

On the whole, the consumption of champagne has increased, and the demand for champagne delivery by domestic champagne customers has also increased, and they are more and more inclined to high-end champagne with higher prices and higher quality. Champagne sales data represent the pursuit and desire of Chinese champagne customers for a high-quality lifestyle, and also confirms that champagne is a symbol of celebration, taste and enjoyment.
